While it had run similar competitions before, Virgin Media Business had decided that in 2015 it was going all out on its Pitch to Rich campaign – a competition giving entrepreneurs the chance to pitch their business ideas to Sir Richard Branson and get a slice of a £1m investment fund.  Pitches were split in to three categories: “Start-Up”, “New Things” and “Grow”, to be submitted online for five rounds of public voting before a Dragons’ Den-style finale – broadcast live online.

PITCH builder

We knew that the success or failure of the campaign would hinge on getting the pitch builder right first time. Due to the tight deadlines I paired up with the brilliant front-end developer Luke Zammit which allowed us to rapidly develop and test the pitch creation process – guerilla testing each iteration.

flexible and evolving

This was key – the platform needed to evolve quickly to reflect the different stages of the competition. In the beginning the focus was on campaign awareness and pitch creation, the next stage was voting, then leaderboards, right up to live streaming of the finale. Once the winners were announced we needed to start telling their story.

A real challenge was designing a platform that could be this flexible without having to develop more and more templates – so we took a module design approach which gave the templates full flexibility with reusable components throughout.
