get digitally creative with BBC brands

Mixital launched as part of the BBC’s Make it Digital, with an ambition for young people to become digital makers. Mixital gives them the chance to create their own content based on the shows they watch and love. It offers users the chance to create games, stories and visualisations using characters and other familiar assets from popular BBC shows.

I worked with UX designer Gemma Fountain on early concept prototypes and Visual designer Margarida da Marça on the final delivery of the platform that gives young people the space to create with all the essential ingredients for creativity.

audiance insight

Nesta’s report into young digital makers highlighted that there was a huge apetite for digital creation, they just needed the space to experiment and build confidence. By partnering with big BBC brands like Eastenders, BBC Introducing, Strictly Come Dancing and BBC Arts young people can experiment with shows they love.

Taking the BBC brand font of areal as my starting point I refined the individual letter shapes to create angles for a  faceted logo mark made up of tonal geometric shapes reflective of the digital creative landscape.

BETA testing

We wanted to get this out early to test the response of users, BBC brands and partners. The feedback will shape the next stage of the project. As part of the testing the BBC invited a group of 14-16 year olds to the BBC for a day to try it out.
